Green masoor dal, also known as green lentils, is a nutritious legume commonly used in Indian cooking. Here's a basic guide on how to cook green masoor dal:

Ingredients:

1 kg green masoor dal (green lentils)

Water

Salt (to taste)

Optional: onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, spices (such as cumin, turmeric, coriander), and herbs (such as cilantro) for additional flavor

Instructions:

Rinse the green masoor dal under cold water in a fine-mesh strainer to remove any dirt or debris.

In a large pot, combine the rinsed green masoor dal with water. The general ratio is 3 cups of water for every 1 cup of lentils. You can adjust the amount of water based on your preferred consistency.

Optional: Add any additional ingredients such as chopped onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, or spices to the pot for flavor. Common spices used in lentil dishes include cumin, turmeric, and coriander. You can also add a bay leaf for extra aroma.

Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and let the dal simmer, partially covered, for about 20-30 minutes or until the lentils are tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and add more water if needed to reach your desired consistency.

Once the lentils are cooked to your liking, add salt to taste and stir to combine.

If you prefer a smoother consistency, you can use an immersion blender or potato masher to partially mash the lentils.

Garnish the cooked green masoor dal with fresh cilantro leaves before serving, if desired.

Serve the dal hot with rice, roti, or naan bread. It can also be enjoyed as a soup or paired with your favorite vegetables.
